Group Dog Training Classes FAQ

Where is the class held?

The class is held at our beautiful training facility in Mantua, NJ. You will be given the exact address in your confirmation email upon registering.

How old does my dog need to be to attend the Group Dog Training Class?

Your dog must be six (6) months of age at the start of the first class.

What vaccinations does my dog need to have?

You must bring printed proof that your dog has had a rabies vaccine, DA2PP (distemper, adenovirus, parvo and parainfluenza) and a bordatella (kennel cough) vaccine for your dog to attend classes.

How long is each week's session?

Each week's session is one hour long.

What is the human orientation?

Prior to attending your first dog or basic manners class, you will be asked to attend a “humans” only orientation. This class is important for you because we discuss how your dog learns, training methods, answer all your questions, etc. It gives the trainer an opportunity to meet and talk with everyone while having your full attention.

What do I need to do when I arrive for class?

Please arrive ten minutes prior to class to relieve your dog and get them calm before the class begins.

How do I prepare my dog for a session?

Exercise and relieve your dog prior to class. If class time is near your puppies mealtime, feed only a very small portion of their meal and bring a hungry dog to class.

What do I need to bring?
  • Four to six-foot leather or nylon leash - no flexi or retractable leashes, please.
  • Flat collar (buckle or clip). Harnesses are fine. If you choose to use a harness, a front clip harness or rope harness is preferable.
  • A bowl and water for your pup
  • Soft, small, high-value dog treats work best. Chopped boiled chicken breast makes for a wonderful, inexpensive and “clean” treat. Check to be sure your pup loves it!
  • Small toys (plush, tug or other) if your dog enjoys them as a reward
  • Chew bone for quiet time (only if easy to take away)
  • Optional Mat for your dog to lie on.
What if my dog is sick?

Only healthy dogs should attend class. If your dog is ill, please contact us. You may attend that session without your dog.

What is the cancellation policy?

We know that life happens - that's why we offer you a fair and accommodating cancellation policy. We can only give a full refund or change your registration date if you notify us at least 7 calendar days prior to your first session. A 50% refund is available 2 days prior to your session. No refunds or date changes will be available after that time. You may transfer your attendance to another class if you were able to provide us with 48-hour prior notice You must notify Your Dog and You via email regarding your need to cancel.

No refunds will be given for non-attendance of any class session once class begins. You are responsible to attend all sessions as outlined in the class schedule. Makeup sessions can be scheduled as a private session with your Instructor, however the make-up is charged to you as a one-hour private consultation fee.

Your class materials can be provided to you electronically upon request if you miss a session. At Your Dog and You our classes are limited in attendance size and often will depend on your participation to offer the class and provide you with optimal training. Full refunds will only be given if Your Dog and You cancels the class. We truly appreciate the opportunity to work with your dog and you and look forward to helping you with all your dog’s needs for years to come.

What if I need to miss a class?

If you must miss a class, the trainer agrees to provide a handout and video demos (when available) for your reference. You must request these via email.

If your dog misses two classes in a six week series, you will be required to re-register and start again. Our groups are designed to build on skills progressively each week and would require substantial one-on-one trainer instruction to bring you back up to speed, which is unfair to the other class participants. We appreciate your understanding.

Neither credits nor refunds are given for missed classes. If your dog is unable to attend class within the first three class sessions due to illness or injury, you will receive a partial credit toward a future class or refund in the amount of 50% of the class fee (a letter from your vet is required). There is a $25 fee for all returned checks.

What if my dog is reactive or aggresive in class?

*AGGRESSIVE OR REACTIVE DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THIS CLASS. Our group classes are not for dogs that display aggressive or reactive behaviors. To best provide a safe and conducive learning environment for all class attendees, if you dog exhibits aggressive or disruptive behavior you may be asked to leave class. Should this happen, you will be refunded 50% of the course fee and we will recommend one of our other services that best address your dog’s needs.
